New suede leather jacket - do I need to waterproof it or apply a protective coating?
I recently bought a suede leather jacket. I am just wondering whether I need to apply a protective coating or waterproof layer (eg. Scotchguard) before I start wearing it? I am worried that if I do nothing, and get caught in the rain the leather will be destroyed. However, I also want to check whether spraying my jacket with a protective coating is going to make the texture hard or sticky or anything like that? Does anyone have any experience or advice?

- i think you should leave it as it is. you will notice that when it first gets a little wet, the water will form in bubbles and just slide off. if it gets dirty, do not dump in water, just wipe it off which a damp cloth. i once had a lovely pair of swede gloves and i ruined them after washing them!
- There is a very good suede protector called Waterstop which if used regularly on suede jackets will make it much easier to look after and prevent it from getting very dirty
- Any store that sells leather wear will have a waterproofing spray for sale.
- I always protect my leather, not only from moisture and water, but from stains as well. Protecting it will keep any soil, spills and dirt from accumulating on the surface. It also helps moisturize the leather to keep it suptle. Guardsman makes some great products that you can find most anywhere, but you can also use Jubliee by SC Johnson wax or even products made for leather furniture. It really will make your jacket last longer, look nicer and keep it clean, as well.
