How to wash a NORTH FACE jacket?

My sister has: http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/womens-jackets-vests/womens-denali-thermal-jacket_2.html He sleeves are a little dirty as well. The tags read: Wash in warm on delicate. BUT! When we did that, they were not clean. On the contrary my sisters now has a gray spot on the side. What is the best way to clean these jackets?

2. The right way, according to the label, is wash warm on delicate. Wash again, but this time use a pre-wash spot treatment.
